Property, cyber and business interruption: so a claim doesn't become a bankruptcy
Inventory, lost margin, ransomware: the trio that saves SMEs.
Updated 5 September 2026 · Information drawn from official legal texts (fedlex.admin.ch), the Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH) and Swiss federal data.
The trio to examine
- Property insurance: inventory, machines, goods, fire, water, theft, machinery breakdown. Beware under-insurance, just like private household cover.
- Business interruption: replaces gross margin and fixed costs during the stoppage. The key dial: the indemnity period (12 or 24 months), calibrate it to your real rebuild time.
- Cyber: data restoration, crisis management, cyber business interruption, liability for data breaches (including nFADP notification duties).
nFADP and cyber: since the new data protection act, a breach can trigger notification duties to the FDPIC and to affected persons. A good cyber policy provides legal support for those steps.
