Not mandatory, but required by most landlords, beware of under-insurance!

Who covers what?
| Private liability | Household contents | |
|---|---|---|
| Protects | Others: damage you, your children or your dog cause to third parties (water damage at the neighbour's, damage to your rented flat) | Your belongings: furniture, clothes, electronics, against fire, water, theft |
| Typical sum | CHF 5–10 million cover | Honestly estimated inventory value (beware under-insurance!) |
| Indicative cost | The duo often costs a few hundred francs a year, comparing pays | |
Trap no. 1, under-insurance: if your contents are worth CHF 60,000 but you declared 30,000, the insurer can cut the payout proportionally, even for a small claim. Re-assess after every move.
Useful options: simple theft away from home (bike, phone), glass breakage, contents casco. Often redundant with other contracts, exactly what we check.
