Car insurance: liability is mandatory, casco depends on your car's value

Partial or full casco, deductibles, bonus system: the dials of your premium.

Updated 5 September 2026 · Information drawn from official legal texts (fedlex.admin.ch), the Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH) and Swiss federal data.

The three tiers

CoverStatusCoversRecommended for
Vehicle liabilityMandatoryInjury and damage caused to othersEveryone (the law requires it)
Partial cascoOptionalTheft, fire, glass breakage, hail, animal collision, vandalismNearly all vehicles, even older ones
Full cascoOptionalPartial casco + damage to your own car, even at faultRecent or leased vehicles (often required)

The price dials

  • Deductibles on liability and casco: higher = lower premium.
  • Bonus/malus system and bonus protection.
  • Market value vs enhanced value in a total loss.
  • Options: personal effects, replacement car, gross negligence.
Simple rule: past 5–7 years or a modest residual value, full casco is rarely worth it, switch to partial and save hundreds per year.
