The main families of supplementary cover
| Cover | What it adds | Relevant for |
|---|---|---|
| Outpatient | Unlisted medicines, glasses, transport, extended prevention, fitness | The most common supplement |
| Alternative medicine | Osteopathy, acupuncture etc. per therapist list | Regular users |
| Semi-private / private hospital | 1–2 bed room, free choice of doctor and hospital across Switzerland | Comfort, buy young |
| Dental | Treatment, children's orthodontics | Take out for children before any diagnosis |
| Travel / abroad | Treatment costs beyond LAMal limits, repatriation | Travellers outside Europe |
Golden rule: never cancel a supplementary plan before written acceptance of the new one, health questionnaires and exclusions are possible. And check notice periods: LCA termination is usually 3 months before renewal.
Tip: basic LAMal and LCA supplements can sit with two different insurers, often the cheapest combination.
