Mandatory accident (LAA) & collective sickness benefits: the employer's covers

Occupational accidents mandatory, daily sickness benefits strongly recommended.

Updated 5 September 2026 · Information drawn from official legal texts (fedlex.admin.ch), the Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH) and Swiss federal data.

LAA: what the law says

  • Occupational accidents: mandatory for all employees, premium paid by the employer.
  • Non-occupational accidents: mandatory from 8h/week, premium in principle paid by the employee.
  • Benefits: treatment costs, daily benefits (80% from day 3), pensions.

Collective daily sickness benefits

Covers salary during illness, typically 80% for 730 days after the chosen waiting period. Without it, the salary obligation under the Code of Obligations (Bern/Zurich scales) remains time-limited, a real risk for the company and the employee alike.

Classic optimisation: lengthen the waiting period (e.g. 30 days instead of 14) and carry the salary yourself in that window, it often cuts the premium significantly. Calculate against your payroll.
