Accident cover for the self-employed: no one covers you automatically
Mandatory accident insurance applies only to employees. Two routes: include accident in LAMal or voluntary LAA.
Updated 5 September 2026 · Information drawn from official legal texts (fedlex.admin.ch), the Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH) and Swiss federal data.
Your two options
| Include accident in LAMal | Voluntary LAA | |
|---|---|---|
| Covers | Treatment costs only | Treatment + daily benefits + disability and survivors' pensions per the LAA act |
| Deductible / co-pay | Yes (those of your LAMal) | Per LAA, generally no deductible |
| For whom | Minimal solution | Recommended as soon as your income supports a household or your work carries risk |
Frequent mistake: going from employee to self-employed and forgetting that your former employer's accident cover lapses (after a short extension). Sort this out before your first day of activity.
