Daily sickness benefits: the self-employed person's number-one cover
Illness stops your income. Choose the waiting period based on your cash reserves.
Updated 5 September 2026 · Information drawn from official legal texts (fedlex.admin.ch), the Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH) and Swiss federal data.
How it works
- Daily benefit: generally up to 80% of insured income, for a maximum of 730 days.
- Waiting period: 7, 14, 30, 60 or 90 days, the longer it is, the lower the premium. Choose it based on your cash reserves.
- Framework: usually a private-law (LCA) contract, health questionnaire and exclusions possible; sign up while healthy.
Smart calibration: 3 months of reserves in the bank? Take a 60–90 day waiting period and halve your premium, insurance is for the catastrophe, not the common cold.
Combine it with
Accident cover for the self-employed (not automatic!) and long-term earning-incapacity cover (annuity) through pillar 3.
