How to choose your insurance in Switzerland: the 5-step method

Which insurance should you pick? Which is the cheapest? Here is the method advisers use, applicable to every Swiss insurance.

Updated 5 September 2026 · Information drawn from official legal texts (fedlex.admin.ch), the Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH) and Swiss federal data.

Short answer: there is no insurance that is "cheapest for everyone" in Switzerland. The right contract depends on your canton, age, situation, deductible and model. The good news: the method to find YOUR best contract is always the same, in 5 steps.

Step 1: start from the need, not the product

A good contract covers a risk you could not absorb alone: a hospital stay, lost income, damage at the neighbour's, a dispute at work. Each situation maps to a family: health belongs to LAMal and LCA supplements, income to pensions (AVS, LPP, pillar 3a), daily life to liability and legal protection.

Step 2: check what the law already covers

Many people pay for overlaps. Before signing anything, take stock of your automatic cover.

The anti-overlap reflex: employed more than 8h/week? Exclude accident cover from your LAMal and save.

Step 3: compare like for like

For basic insurance, the law imposes identical benefits on every insurer: only the premium changes, often by over CHF 100 per month within one canton. Comparing is therefore risk-free. For supplements and private lines: compare exclusions and caps before price.

Step 4: set the three dials

Deductible (high if healthy, low with regular treatment), model (family doctor, telmed or HMO save 10 to 25%), options (cut the overlaps). Our simulator gives an order of magnitude in 30 seconds.

Step 5: review every autumn

New premiums are published in late September; until 30 November your termination letter can reach your insurer for a change on 1 January. One 20-minute annual check is enough. Our deadlines calendar keeps you on track.

So, who is the cheapest?
